Challenging Heights (CH) is a Ghanaian non-governmental organization dedicated to protecting children from exploitation and advancing community development through education, advocacy, environmental action, and social justice programming.
Purpose of the Role
Challenging Heights is seeking a highly qualified Independent Financial Controller to provide independent financial oversight, ensure strong internal controls, and strengthen transparency, accountability, and donor confidence.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide independent oversight of CH’s financial systems and controls
- Prepare monthly financial reports, including:
- Income & Expenditure Statement
- Balance Sheet
- Cash Flow Statement
- Statement of Equity
- Review financial reports quarterly with designated donor financial representatives
- Oversee segregated bank accounts for restricted donor funds and ensure accurate reconciliations
- Ensure all bank transactions are fully recorded and aligned with accounting system entities
- Ensure accurate payroll management and traceable allocation of staff costs across programs
- Oversee compliance with procurement policies, including value-for-money and competitive bidding
- Enforce dual-authorization controls for disbursements, including Controller sign-off
- Support budgeting, financial planning, audits, and donor reporting
- Ensure enforcement of conflict-of-interest policies and disclosure of related-party transactions
- Support staff training on financial controls, time allocation, and compliance procedures
Qualifications & Experience
Required
- Fully qualified Chartered Accountant (CA, ACCA, CPA, or equivalent)
- 5–10 years relevant professional experience
- Proven experience in NGO or donor-funded environments
- Strong knowledge of internal controls, audits, and financial reporting
Preferred
- Experience working with international donors and foundations
- Familiarity with QuickBooks or similar accounting systems
- Experience reporting to Boards and external funders
Independence & Ethics
- Must not hold a management role within Challenging Heights
- Must demonstrate professional independence, objectivity, and confidentiality
- Any potential conflicts of interest must be declared
