ABOUT CHALLENGING HEIGHTS

FOUNDER STORY

JAMES KOFI ANNAN

From Survivor to Advocate

James Kofi Annan, founder of Challenging Heights, understands the realities of child trafficking firsthand.

Born into a farming family in Ghana’s Central Region, James grew up in Tuansa - a community displaced by devastating floods that destroyed fertile farmland. As families struggled to recover their livelihoods, James was sold into forced labor in the fishing industry at the age of six.

At thirteen, he escaped exploitation and worked tirelessly to pursue an education, eventually graduating from college and beginning a career in banking.

Guided by the belief that “to whom much is given, much is expected,” James left his banking career to found Challenging Heights. What began as a grassroots effort to rescue children from trafficking has grown into a national organization working with families, communities, and partners to break cycles of exploitation for young people across Ghana.

Today, this commitment continues to guide the mission and vision of Challenging Heights.
