BY CHALLENGING HEIGHTS / JUNE 21, 2017
It is a relatively routine morning in Joma, a small town along the coast of Ghana. Women walk the streets attending to daily activities, and children play nearby, giving the appearance of an ordinary community at work. For some of the children from the Challenging Heights rehabilitation program, however, this visit carries special significance.
As part of the reintegration process, children are supported to visit their families and communities ahead of permanent reunification. These supervised home visits allow social workers to assess the home environment, strengthen family bonds, and prepare both children and caregivers for a safe and successful return.
The visits also provide an opportunity to address concerns, offer guidance to caregivers, and reinforce the importance of education and child protection. By carefully preparing families and children, Challenging Heights helps ensure reintegration is sustainable and in the best interest of the child.
