Positive behaviour recognition supports children’s recovery

BY CHALLENGING HEIGHTS / MARCH 15, 2017

After we conduct a rescue and the children are brought to the Challenging Heights Hovde House rehabilitation shelter, the journey toward healing and reintegration begins. For many of these children, arrival at the shelter marks the first time in a long while that they experience safety, care, and stability.

At the Hovde House, children receive immediate support to address their physical, emotional, and psychological needs. This includes medical screening and treatment, nutritious meals, clean clothing, and a safe place to rest. Beyond meeting these urgent needs, our team of trained caregivers and social workers works closely with each child to provide psychosocial support, helping them process their experiences and begin the path to recovery.

Education and personal development are also key components of the rehabilitation process. Children are enrolled in school or enrolled in bridging classes to help them transition back into formal education. Recreational activities, creative arts, and life-skills training are incorporated into daily routines to restore confidence, build resilience, and encourage positive social interaction.

Family tracing and assessment run alongside rehabilitation efforts. Challenging Heights works with local authorities, community leaders, and families to identify safe and supportive homes for reintegration. Where possible, children are reunited with their families, and caregivers receive guidance and support to help prevent re-trafficking and ensure the child’s long-term wellbeing.

Rehabilitation at the Hovde House is not just about recovery—it is about restoring dignity, hope, and opportunity. Each child’s journey is unique, but our commitment remains the same: to ensure that every child rescued has the chance to heal, learn, and grow in a safe and nurturing environment.
