Prevention – Challenging Heights

wPreventing exploitation requires strong families, resilient communities, and systems that protect children before harm occurs.

Challenging Heights works with communities across Ghana to reduce vulnerability through livelihood programs, child protection initiatives, environmental advocacy, and policy engagement.’

To date, these efforts have reached over 15,280 individuals, strengthening community capacity to protect children and prevent exploitation.

LIVELIHOOD EMPOWERMENT

Economic instability can increase vulnerability to trafficking and exploitation. Challenging Heights supports over 11,088 individuals through livelihood programs that strengthen household incomes and economic resilience.

In coastal communities, the organization works with fishermen and fishmongers to improve livelihoods through micro-loans, improved equipment, and training in sustainable fishing practices. Programs supporting women in agriculture and small businesses provide climate-resilient seeds, business training, and market access, helping expand economic opportunities for women and families.

Vocational skills programs for young people also provide practical training that supports employment and entrepreneurship, helping reduce economic pressures that can lead to exploitation.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESILENCE

Evidence from our work shows that environmental pollution and climate-related disruptions weaken economic livelihoods and increase risks of exploitation in vulnerable communities.

Challenging Heights works to link environmental protection with community resilience and child protection. Key initiatives include the protection of ecosystems such as the Winneba-Pomadze Ramsar Site, campaigns addressing ocean and river pollution, and advocacy for the preservation of natural and community heritage resources.

The organization also convenes the Annual Fishing & Marine Dialogue, bringing together government officials, community leaders, and fishing industry stakeholders to address environmental challenges affecting coastal livelihoods.

ADVOCACY

Challenging Heights engages in advocacy at the community, national, and international levels to strengthen child protection systems and advance the rights of children and young people. By working with communities, policymakers, and global partners, the organization helps ensure that commitments to protect children translate into meaningful change on the ground.

COMMUNITY LEVEL

At the community level, Challenging Heights works with schools, families, traditional leaders, and local authorities to address the root causes of trafficking, exploitation, and gender-based violence that place children at risk.

Through community awareness campaigns, stakeholder dialogues, and school outreach programs, the organization promotes children’s rights, gender equality, and safer environments for young people at home and in schools.

Child Rights Clubs play a key role in this work. These clubs empower children to become ambassadors for children’s rights, equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their peers and promote safer communities.

Community sensitization initiatives also engage duty bearers—including parents, teachers, community leaders, and local authorities—to clarify their roles and responsibilities in protecting children. These efforts help ensure that child protection is a shared community priority.

Across all community-based advocacy efforts, gender equity is a central focus, with particular attention given to promoting girl-child education and leadership.

NATIONAL LEVEL

At the national level, Challenging Heights contributes to policy dialogue and reform to strengthen Ghana’s legal and institutional response to trafficking and child exploitation.

The organization has participated in key policy discussions and provided input into several major national frameworks, including the Human Trafficking Act, which strengthened Ghana’s legal framework for addressing trafficking and exploitation, as well as the Ghana Accelerated National Plan of Action for the Elimination of Child Labour and the National Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Policy.

Through these engagements, Challenging Heights helps ensure that national policies reflect the realities faced by vulnerable children and communities.

INTERNATIONAL LEVEL

Challenging Heights also engages with international partners, networks, and advocacy platforms to elevate awareness of trafficking and child exploitation and to contribute to global efforts to strengthen child protection systems.

By sharing lessons from its work in communities across Ghana, the organization helps inform international discussions on prevention, survivor support, and sustainable approaches to ending trafficking and exploitation.
