With an unexpected reprieve, Challenging Heights calls for greater cooperation

BY CHALLENGING HEIGHTS / JUNE 28, 2017

Challenging Heights notes that Ghana has maintained its Tier 2 Watch List status in the 2017 United States Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, despite ongoing concerns about the country’s response to human trafficking.

While this standing reflects some progress and continued engagement by government and civil society actors, it also underscores persistent gaps in prevention, protection, and prosecution. Child trafficking, particularly for forced labour in fishing, mining, and domestic work, remains widespread, and existing policies are often weakened by poor enforcement and limited resources.

Challenging Heights commends recent efforts to rescue and rehabilitate trafficked children but stresses that sustained progress will require stronger cooperation among government agencies, law enforcement, traditional authorities, and civil society organizations. Increased investment in prevention and survivor support is essential.

This development should serve as a renewed call to action to strengthen collective efforts to protect children and end human trafficking in Ghana.
