Why prevention matters
Preventing exploitation requires strong families, resilient communities, and systems that protect children before harm occurs. It is the most far-reaching stage of our framework, addressing the root causes that make children vulnerable in the first place.
Challenging Heights works with communities across Ghana to reduce vulnerability through livelihood programmes, child protection initiatives, environmental advocacy, and sustained policy engagement.
To date, these efforts have reached over 15,280 individuals — strengthening community capacity to protect children and prevent exploitation at its source.
Prevention is where Challenging Heights breaks the cycle for good: not just rescuing one child, but transforming the conditions that put an entire generation at risk.
Theme 01
Economic instability increases vulnerability to trafficking and exploitation. Challenging Heights supports over 11,088 individuals through livelihood programmes that strengthen household incomes and economic resilience.
In coastal communities, we work with fishermen and fishmongers to improve livelihoods through micro-loans, improved equipment, and training in sustainable fishing practices. Programmes supporting women in agriculture and small business provide climate-resilient seeds, business training, and market access.

Theme 02
Evidence from our work shows that environmental pollution and climate-related disruptions weaken economic livelihoods and increase the risks of exploitation in vulnerable communities.
Challenging Heights links environmental protection with community resilience and child protection. Key initiatives include protecting ecosystems such as the Winneba-Pomadze Ramsar Site, campaigns addressing ocean and river pollution, and advocacy for the preservation of natural and community heritage resources.
We also convene the Annual Fishing & Marine Dialogue, bringing together government officials, community leaders, and fishing industry stakeholders to address environmental challenges affecting coastal livelihoods.
Theme 03
Challenging Heights engages in advocacy at the community, national, and international levels to strengthen child protection systems and advance the rights of children and young people.
By working with communities, policymakers, and global partners, we help ensure that commitments to protect children translate into meaningful change on the ground — not just words on paper, but real protection for real children.
Advocacy at every level
COMMUNITY LEVEL
We work with schools, families, traditional leaders, and local authorities to address the root causes of trafficking, exploitation, and gender-based violence.
NATIONAL LEVEL
We contribute to policy dialogue and reform to strengthen Ghana’s legal and institutional response to trafficking and child exploitation.
INTERNATIONAL LEVEL
We engage with international partners, networks, and advocacy platforms to elevate awareness of trafficking and child exploitation.
At the heart of our community work, Child Rights Clubs empower children to become ambassadors for children’s rights — equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their peers and promote safer communities. Across all our community-based advocacy, gender equity is a central focus, with particular attention given to promoting girl-child education and leadership.
