How Change Happens

Breaking cycles of trafficking and exploitation requires working at every level — from rescuing individual children to transforming the conditions that put them at risk.

Our approach

Addressing both the harm and its root causes

Challenging Heights works across multiple levels to break cycles of trafficking and economic exploitation affecting young people in Ghana. Through our Social Transformation Framework, we address both the immediate harms of exploitation and the structural conditions that allow it to persist.

Children are rescued from trafficking and other forms of exploitation, then supported through long-term recovery and reintegration programmes that provide education, psychosocial care, and meaningful opportunities to rebuild their lives.

At the same time, we work in partnership with families, communities, and institutions to address the economic, social, and environmental conditions that increase vulnerability to exploitation in the first place.

Together, these efforts help create safer communities and expand pathways to opportunity — enabling young people and families to build independent, self-sufficient futures free from the threat of exploitation.

The Social Transformation Framework

One framework, three connected stages

Our framework is built on a simple but powerful insight: ending exploitation is not a single act, but a continuum. It begins with rescuing a child from immediate danger, continues through the long and patient work of recovery and transformation, and extends outward into the communities where prevention breaks the cycle for the next generation. Each stage reinforces the others, and together they create lasting, generational change.

STAGE 01

Rescue

Children trapped in trafficking and forced labour — including on Lake Volta — are identified and safely brought to our recovery centre. There, they receive immediate care, stability, and the holistic support they need to begin healing. Rescue is the first, urgent step toward restoring a child’s safety, dignity, and sense of possibility.

STAGE 02

Transformation

Recovery does not happen overnight. Survivors receive long-term support through education, psychosocial care, mentorship, and vocational training, so they can rebuild confidence, independence, and hope for their futures. With the right opportunities and sustained support, young people reclaim their childhoods and begin to pursue their own aspirations.

STAGE 03

Prevention

Lasting protection requires strong families and resilient communities. We work alongside families, community leaders, and local and national institutions to strengthen economic stability and child protection systems. When communities are empowered with knowledge, resources, and support, the cycles that lead to exploitation are interrupted for good — protecting not just one child, but an entire generation.

Working at every level

From one child to national systems

The child

Every intervention begins with the individual child — their rescue, their recovery, and their right to a safe and dignified future.

The family

We strengthen household economic stability and parenting capacity, so families can protect and provide for their children.

The community

Through Child Rights Clubs and Community Child Protection Committees, we build local systems that keep children safe.

The nation

We engage government, law enforcement, and policymakers to strengthen Ghana’s child protection framework at the national level.

This work is only possible together

Every rescue, every recovery, and every protected community depends on the support of people who believe no child should be exploited.
