Rescued, Educated, Empowered: Samuel’s Path from Lake Volta to Service

At just eight years old, Samuel was trafficked into forced labour. For eight years, his childhood was shaped by the harsh realities of life on Lake Volta until Challenging Heights rescued him at the age of sixteen.

Rescue, however, was only the beginning.

Determined to build a better future, Samuel embraced the opportunity to return to school. Challenging Heights supported him through every stage of his education. Under our Enhanced Reintegration Program, he successfully completed Senior High School and was supported onward to university, with assistance covering admission and accommodation fees, learning materials, and stipends.

While settling into tertiary education, Samuel received an unexpected opportunity: admission into the Ghana Prisons Service. Recognising the significance of this milestone, he made the bold decision to defer his university studies to pursue professional training.

Today, Samuel has completed his rigorous training and now serves as a Prison Officer. From a child once trapped in modern slavery, he has grown into a disciplined public servant committed to protecting society.

Samuel’s journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support, survivors do more than recover, they lead. We are immensely proud of the man he has become and look forward to supporting him as he completes his university education while excelling in his service to Ghana.
