“Casting nets, disentangling them when they got trapped, diving deep into the lake, selling fish, mending damaged nets, and spending long hours on the water—this was my daily routine for years,” says Eyi, a rescued boy.
Eyi was sent to Lake Volta at the age of eight by his aunt, who had promised his parents that he would be enrolled in school and properly cared for. Instead, from the moment he arrived, his life revolved entirely around fishing and related labour.
During this time, Eyi endured significant hardship, including various forms of abuse and trauma far beyond what any child should experience.
Today, thanks to the support of our partners and donors, Eyi is safe and receiving comprehensive care at our Recovery Centre. He is benefiting from medical attention, psychosocial support, and educational assistance as he begins his journey toward healing and transformation.
Eyi’s story is one of resilience, and his future now holds renewed promise. We are optimistic about the path ahead as he continues to recover and rebuild his life.
We also commend Eyi’s mother for reporting his situation to our office. Her action played a crucial role in helping us identify and rescue him.
