About Challenging Heights
Challenging Heights is a Ghanaian child protection organisation working to end child trafficking and exploitation, with a particular focus on children trafficked into the fishing industry on Lake Volta. Registered with the Registrar General’s Department (CG115442014), the organisation works across rescue, recovery, reintegration, education, and community-based prevention, empowering families and communities across Ghana to break cycles of exploitation. Challenging Heights is headquartered in Accra.
The Opportunity
Following the adoption of a revised Constitution and strengthened governance framework in July 2026, the Board of Directors of Challenging Heights invites expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons for appointment as Treasurer of the Board. The Treasurer is one of five officers of the Board, alongside the Chairperson and the Secretary, and plays a central role in the organisation’s financial governance and accountability to donors, regulators, and the communities it serves.
Role of the Treasurer
The Treasurer serves as a full member of the Board of Directors and, in addition:
- Chairs the Audit and Finance Committee of the Board, which assists the Board in overseeing financial governance, external audit, financial reporting, and internal controls;
- Oversees the annual audit of the organisation’s financial accounts, including leading the search for external auditors and recommending suitable auditors to the Board;
- Supports the Board’s review and approval of the annual budget and audited financial statements;
- Oversees, through the Audit and Finance Committee, management’s remediation of audit findings and the strengthening of internal controls; and
- Contributes as a Board member to strategic direction, oversight, and accountability across the organisation’s work.
Time Commitment and Terms - The Board meets at least four times a year; meetings may be held in person in Accra or virtually.
- The Audit and Finance Committee meets at least twice a year, including before the external audit begins and on receipt of the draft financial statements.
- Appointment is for a two-year, renewable term.
- The position is voluntary and carries no remuneration. Reasonable costs incurred in the course of Board duties (such as transport, internet, and telephone) may be reimbursed.
Who We Are Looking For
The ideal candidate will bring:
- A strong background in finance, accounting, or audit, with a recognised professional qualification
(for example ICAG, ACCA, CIMA, or CPA) or equivalent senior financial management experience; - Experience of financial oversight, external audit processes, and internal controls, ideally in the not-for-profit, public, or regulated sectors;
- Sound judgement, integrity, and the ability to exercise independent oversight;
- A commitment to child rights and to the mission and values of Challenging Heights; and
- The time and willingness to prepare for and participate actively in Board and Committee business.
Board members are bound by the organisation’s Constitution, Board Code of Conduct, Conflict of Interest Policy, and Child Protection Protocols. Safeguarding is a standing responsibility of the Board. In line with the Constitution, a serving Director may not be an officer of a political party at the national, regional, or constituency level, or a declared parliamentary or presidential candidate. Appointment is subject to due diligence.
