Mary always dreamed of becoming a nurse.
It’s a modest dream, but for her it once felt impossibly out of reach. As a child, she was rescued from exploitative labour on Lake Volta and given something she had never had before: the chance to imagine a different future.
She held onto that dream through high school. When support from home didn’t come, she found her own way forward, working as a receptionist for three years, saving whatever she could toward the future she had pictured for herself.
Then an opportunity came.
Through Challenging Heights’ Enhanced Reintegration and Mentorship Programme, Mary gained admission to a nurses and midwifery training school in Tamale. What had once seemed like a distant dream was finally within reach.
But getting into school was only the beginning.
Throughout her tertiary education, Challenging Heights stood beside her, supporting her with tuition, accommodation, educational supplies and stipends, clearing the barriers between Mary and the future she had worked so hard to build.
And Mary did the rest.
She studied. She persevered. She kept going.
Four years later, that journey reached a remarkable milestone: Mary is now a Registered Midwife.
Her transformation didn’t happen overnight. It took rescue. It took opportunity. It took years of support. And above all, it took a young woman who refused to give up on the life she wanted.
Today, she wears the title Registered Midwife, and behind it is a story of resilience, education and a dream that refused to die.
