About Challenging Heights
A nonprofit born from personal experience, driven by an unshakeable belief that
every child in Ghana deserves safety, dignity, and the freedom to build their own
future.
“To whom much is given, much is expected. That belief has guided everything I have done since the day I founded Challenging Heights.”
James Kofi Annan, Founder & PresidentFOUNDER STORY
James Kofi Annan
From Survivor to Advocate
Driven by a fierce determination to build a different life, he worked tirelessly to pursue an education, eventually graduating from college and beginning a career in banking.
But the memories of what he had endured, and knowing that thousands of children across Ghana were still living that reality, would not leave him.
What began as a grassroots effort to rescue children from Lake Volta has grown into a national organization working across all 14 regions of Ghana.
Alongside families, communities, and national and international partners, Challenging Heights is breaking cycles of exploitation for young people and their families across Ghana.
Our mission
To champion children’s rights, empower families and communities across Ghana to break cycles of exploitation through rescue, long-term survivor support, and community-based prevention.
Our vision
A country where children’s rights are protected and families are free from economic exploitation.
Our values
What Guides Us
respect for the dignity and potential of every young person we serve.
Equity
Community Partnership
Lasting change happens when communities are empowered to protect their children and shape their own futures. Working alongside families, community leaders, and institutions is key to co-creating change.
Trust & Transparency
Our guiding principles
Young People Are at-Risk of Exploitation,
And at-Promise of Great Potential
Three principles drive our work towards unleashing the next generation of changemakers in Ghana.
When You Rescue One Young Person, you rescue a whole generation
Economic exploitation destabilises entire families and communities. When a young person is rescued and supported to recover, reintegrate, and rebuild their future, the impact extends far beyond that one life. Young people supported by Challenging Heights often return as mentors and advocates in their own communities, stabilising households and interrupting generational cycles of exploitation.
It takes a Community to Heal A Child
Children recover and thrive best within supportive environments. Healing cannot happen through individual intervention alone — it requires strong families, schools, and community systems.
Challenging Heights works alongside families, teachers, and community leaders to ensure that children returning home are supported and protected. Child Rights Clubs and Community Child Protection Committees strengthen local systems that safeguard young people.
Community engagement ensures that reintegration is sustainable and that children remain safe long after the initial rescue.
Education And Livelihood Empowerment Break Cycles of Exploitation
Expanding education and livelihood opportunities reduces vulnerability by strengthening family stability and creating pathways for young people to build independent futures.
