Responsible Mining

Our Responsible Mining project is focused on restoring degraded landscapes and advocating for stronger accountability in the mining sector. To this end, we assess the environmental and health impacts of mining, promote afforestation, and push for stricter enforcement of reclamation bonds. As part of these efforts, Challenging Heights participated in the national Green Ghana Day initiative in 2021, planting 1,000 tree seedlings. This initiative contributes to the restoration of tree cover, demonstrating our dedication to environmental rehabilitation and sustainable land use. Additionally, in 2025, we gathered evidence of how mining is eroding other alternative sources of livelihood in Obuasi, and creating an enabling environment for heightened tensions among community members and mining companies. To this end, we provided immediate financial support to survivors and families of persons who died in the 18th January confrontation between community members and the military in Obuasi.
